Does anyone know the significance of the masks worn during Tet Spring Festival in Vietnam?

During the Tet Spring Festival in Vietnam people wear round masks, made from wicker, I think, with colourful faces painted on them. I'm trying to find out whether there's any story behind these masks - or whether they signify anything.
