Why is the United States' involvement in the Vietnam War so often called a “quagmire”?

a quagmire is difficult terrain. if you drive into it, its difficult to get out of it. its said that 4 successive presients tried to get us out of vietnam. three of them got us in deeper while only the last one (ford) was able to get us out.
