How much food should a tomcat eat every day?

Our two year old cat is getting fatter by the day. He just sleeps and eats and rolls over every now and again and wants his belly tickled. Then he goes back to sleep and eats a bit more and thats his life. So how do I just give him enough At the moment his bowl is filled all the time so thats going to stop.
