Yes, because I think being separated from your love is not anywhere near as severe as Briony's punishment. She was forced to live with self-hatred and contempt for the rest of eternity, and could not move on with her life because of the worthlessness and regret she felt. No human being deserves that. We have all done terrible things, and in the end, you can not go around saying one sin is worse than the other. All sins are equally terrible. At least she was able to admit what she had done in the end. Also, the relationship between Cecilia and Robbie was mostly ual, and was really just a form of lust. How well did they truly know each other and love each other as people? Maybe they were not meant to be because of the lack of substance to their relationship. Maybe Briony was the one who saw their romance as flawless, when really it was just superficial. She was a fanciful character after all, maybe she imagined more than Ian McEwan lets on.
