Why do lemmings run off cliffs?

When the colony gets too big a load of the little blighters suddenly up-sticks and moves on to find pastures new. They then head in a direction and will try to cross anything that crosses their path. unfortunately this means they sometimes come across a cliff and jump off into the sea - they then keep swimming till they die :-/ silly fools
